S&P cut the counterparty credit and financial strength ratings on the unit to B+ from BB. The ratings service also said it was lowering the ratings outlook on parent company MGIC to negative from stable. "The downgrade of MGIC primarily reflects the company's weak third-quarter operating results, which were below our expectations," said Ron Joas, an S&P credit analyst, in a statement. "The company reported a loss ratio of 331%, compared with a loss ratio of 222% in the second quarter of 2009. A sharp increase in the delinquent loan inventory resulted, in part, from a transition of delinquencies into prime loans."
